AOTA Holds Town Meeting at Tufts

AOTA Executive Director Fred Somers spoke to faculty, students, and alumni of the Boston School of Occupational Therapy (BSOT) at Tufts University December 7 about the Centennial Vision as well as new directions for the profession. AOTA is looking at ways to partner with educators to help strengthen occupational therapy’s capacity to fulfill its potential and mission in the 21st century. More town hall meetings are expected.

Occupational Therapy Makes the List of 'Best Careers in 2007'
The outlook for occupational therapy as a career choice is bright, according to U.S. News & World Report, given current economic and workplace trends. Aging baby boomers seeking to live fuller, more active lives are expected to drive the demand for health, wellness, and rehabilitation services for decades to come. AOTA President M. Carolyn Baum was interviewed for the feature story.

AOTA Auditor/Building Update
The audited financial statements for AOTA’s fiscal year 2005–2006 are now available for review. For the year, the Association increased its net assets by $257,465. In addition, AOTA recently has taken steps to increase the diversity of its assets and strengthen its financial standing.

CMS Eliminates Manual Cap Exception Process, Changes Documentation Requirements
On December 29, 2006, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued policy changes that eliminate the manual cap exception process and change requirements for the documentation of evaluations. AOTA is working as quickly as possible to develop materials to help occupational therapists comply with the new requirements. These materials will be posted on the AOTA Web site as soon as they are available.

National Council on Aging Seeks Creative and Best Practices to Prevent Falls
The National Council on Aging (NCOA), in collaboration with the Falls Free™ Coalition, would like to identify and promote 10 “Creative and Best Practices in Home Safety Assessment and Modification” that address fall risks. Best practices should be associated with, or part of, a comprehensive fall prevention intervention program. Self-nominations will be accepted online through January; winning programs will be announced in March and receive national recognition and a cash award.
