Medicare Quality Measures for Occupational Therapy Coming in July
AOTA is working diligently to address new quality and payment options for Medicare Part B outpatient therapy, which take effect July 1, 2007, as part of a voluntary reporting program. AOTA will meet with CMS officials to identify the quality measures for which occupational therapists can provide data and their effect on therapy services. A 1.5% bonus payment for participation will be available.

Advocacy Builds Recognition of Occupational Therapy
Raising public awareness of occupational therapy is an essential part of advocacy, notes AOTA President-Elect Penny Moyers. A personal visit or letter to the office of an elected official—at the federal or local level—is something that every AOTA member can do.

AOTA/AOTF Joint Mentoring Program Launches
Eighteen occupational therapists have been selected for a unique leadership program sponsored by AOTA and AOTF. The first-ever joint Leadership Mentoring Program for Occupational Therapy Faculty addresses the critical need within the profession to support the development of new leaders in the academic community.

AOTPAC Attends Congressional Ceremonies
The 110th Congress took their oaths of office January 4, 2007. Amy Lamb, OTD, OTR/L, the new chair of AOTPAC, participated in the ceremonial events with AOTA Public Affairs staff.

Scope of Practice Issues Update: Expect Challenges in 2007
This year, AOTA will help support state association licensure initiatives in Michigan and Indiana. Members also should expect scope of practice challenges at the state level from speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, developmental therapists, athletic trainers, recreational therapists, orthotists and prosthetists, wheelchair suppliers and manufacturers, optometrists, and psychologists.
