COURSE DESCRIPTION

As you participate in this new online course from AOTA, you will learn about assistive technology (AT), focusing specifically on the AT service delivery process, the role of occupational therapy in that process, and the availability and implementation of AT devices.

The purpose of this course is to provide occupational therapy practitioners with knowledge of the AT process as it is delivered in schools, and how it can assist practitioners in considering the use of technology to increase student participation in meaningful school-based occupations. A wide range of tools may be defined as AT devices, but understanding the process the occupational therapy practitioner uses to incorporate those tools in providing modifications and accommodations for students is a foundational skill.

This online course may be a springboard for participants to pursue more specialized training in the area of AT services and devices, or simply increase their familiarity with AT services and device features and provide resources for more specialized supports. The course assumes that participants are familiar with the basic processes for providing educational supports for students with disabilities, as outlined in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 and related legislation.
