Course Description
Students with Asperger syndrome, nonverbal learning disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, and attention deficit disorders, as well as those with lower IQ scores, present a challenge to occupational therapists practicing in the area of driver rehabilitation. This highly visual and creative course addresses skills deficits related to those diagnoses. Using methods and tools that address the skills needed for driving, including video review, participants will be able to assess and make decisions about a student's readiness to drive and put the techniques learned directly into their practice. Participants will gain intervention techniques to help their clients develop the social and executive function skills necessary for specific driving tasks.

Maximize Your Learning on Student Readiness to Drive

Participants will get more from this course if they have previously taken the CEonCD™ course Creating Successful Transitions to Community Mobility Independence for Adolescents, which provides occupational therapists with a deeper understanding of the unique life skills and community mobility challenges associated with cognitive and social limitations. Community mobility skills development is highly individualized; the first course helps the therapist determine students' general readiness to learn to drive and participate in other forms of community mobility. It also describes the assessment tools and techniques that are referred to throughout this course.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to

  • Identify the essential tools and methods for assessing the readiness to drive for students with cognitive disabilities
  • Identify driving situations that challenge social and executive function skills
  • Identify intervention methods that will enable occupational therapists to teach the skills necessary for interpreting the actions of other drivers
  • Identify intervention activities to develop a student’s executive function skills for managing intersections, maneuvers, and roadway hazards
  • Identify the use of a visual search tool to improve a student's visual search skills and executive function skills for driving.
